Christopher Mclelland

Australian Artist

Christopher McClelland is a multi-award winning Australian painter who has exhibited widely within Australia and also in London, Paris, New York and Florence. He is represented in public and private collections both in Australia and overseas. Originally from Melbourne, he studied art at the National Gallery School of Art, the Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Melbourne. While Christopher’s art practice spans over 40 years, over the past 10 years he has been exploring and adapting very traditional techniques of painting and drawing, developed through post-graduate academic painting and drawing studies he completed in Florence and Paris. Light, colour and atmosphere are important aspects of his work, as well as explorations of identity and culture. Although the work contains aspects of Academic Realism and many of the techniques are inspired by the artists of the Renaissance, Baroque and even 19th century European narrative paintings, he is fascinated by the crossover between the rigour of academic techniques and lusciousness of paint being allowed its own freedom of expression. In this way, many of the works are explorations of the act of painting itself.
